Transparency in Executive Compensation - Proper Reporting Tools and Controls

Presentation:  8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. 

As part of this presentation, we will look at emerging economic trends driving executive compensation and the analytical tools and measures that are used to assess both compliance and performance. We will take a hands-on view of the Economic Research Institute's (ERI) Executive Compensation Assessor and its use of inter-industry measures that are reported in Proxy Statements and other financial documents. and some of the best ways to compare and report Company practices with those of industry.

As part of this program, we will consider:

  • Why the reporting of executive compensation is unique, and how it is affected by economic trends and regulatory developments?
  • What types of data elements are most important in proxy statements and other financial reports?
  • What trends we have seen in the last five years related to the scale and mix of executive compensation?
  • How we can understand and differentiate between various salary survey data methodologies?
  • What some best practices for building compensation plans are that align the interests of the executive to the interests of the company?
  • How data and software tools from ERI and others can be used to collect and provide key information for comparison purposes?

Matt Skrinjar serves as Project Manager and Data Analyst at the Economic Research Institute (ERI) in Orange County and specializes in Executive Compensation Pay Practices for publicly traded and privately held organizations. He has prepared a number of research papers and hosts periodic webinars related to executive pay trends, pay package design and management, compensation benchmarking, and compensation committee compliance best practices.  Matt also produces a quarterly report that tracks top executive pay trends for companies included in the Russell 300 stock index.

Matt is intricately involved with ERI’s collection and analysis of compensation data.  As part of a team of data analysts, he combines ERI’s internal salary survey data with data extracted from public company filings to produce reasonable compensation estimates generated by a suite of software products.  As product manager to Executive Compensation Assessor, Matt uses data analysis techniques along with his experience in compensation practices to help build a tool that allows users to quickly analyze all aspects of top executive pay.  Matt obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Miami University and his Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics from the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
