The California Pay Equity Act, and AB 168 prohibiting the reporting of salary history on employment applications, are among the latest forms of compensation legislation affecting employer work practices. These statutes, along with minimum wage statues, have greatly heightened applicant, employee, and employer awareness of the need for employers to have a defensible basis for determining compensation rates and avoiding discrimination on the basis of gender and other protected classes.  In this program, our panel will consider the legislative history and emerging case law and we will collectively share what actions employers are adopting in responding to compliance needs.

  • The view of emerging plaintiff cases involving claims of discrimination.
  • Steps and remedies that employers may take as part of risk management

Joining us for this timely discussion will be three prominent employer’s attorneys from local firms who are well versed in employment law and discrimination matters:

Mr. Lovell is an associate in the Orange County Office. He practices in all areas of labor and employment law and has handled a wide variety of matters. He has successfully represented numerous private and public sector employers, in a variety of employment-related claims, including sexual harassment, retaliation, discrimination, wrongful termination, constructive discharge, Title VII, ADA, wage and hour, Labor Code 123a, fraud, and breach of contract litigation. Mr. Lovell has also successfully represented clients in responding to complaints before numerous state and federal agencies, including the Department of Fair Employment and Housing, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Department of Labor Standards Enforcement, the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, the National Labor Relations Board, the Public Employment Relations Board, and Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. In addition, Mr. Lovell advises employers on all aspects of employment laws and personnel management.

Ms. Raanan represents clients in complex wage and hour litigation, involving claims of employee misclassification, rounding violations, regular rate of pay issues, meal/rest period compliance, expense reimbursement, off-the-clock issues, as well as derivate claims under California’s Unfair Competition law, and Private Attorneys General Act. During her career, Ms. Raanan has represents a range of businesses, from small family-owned businesses and start-ups to large financial institutions. Ms. Raanan is actively involved in the local legal community as an executive committee member of the Orange County Bar Association’s Labor and Employment section. Ms. Raanan is also co-chair of the American Cancer Society’s Newport Beach 2016 Relay for Life and volunteers her time at a variety of ACS OC events, including Making Strides (to raise breast cancer awareness).

Mr. Sonne specializes in labor and employment law representing employers. He litigates in multiple areas of employment law and defends against individual and class action lawsuits alleging violations of employment law and defends against class action lawsuits alleging violations of wage and hour laws, discrimination, wrongful discrimination, wrongful termination, harassment, breach of contract, Labor Code Section 132a claims, and other related matters. Mr. Sonne represents employers in state and federal courts, as well as before the DLSE, EDD, and other administrative bodies. He also advises employers on handbook preparation, employment contracts and applications, and personnel policies. Mr. Sonne also has experience with the National Labor Relations Board and has represented employers in related investigations. He also has experience in civil appeal practices, including briefing and oral argument before the California Court of Appeal and briefing to the California Supreme Court. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Sonne worked in the White House as a writer, and also was a member of the Clinton-Bush Transition Team in 2000. He also worked in the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
