Pay transparency has been coming for a long time. Now California has taken this one step further by also giving employees the right to ask for the pay range of their job. Employers need to tackle multiple topics ranging from “what pay range are we sharing” to “how do we explain this to an employee whose pay is at the lower end of the pay range”. But, there is more to it. With all this information out there, employees have more visibility of prevailing pay rates than ever in the past and that can help or hurt your own standing in this still very competitive labor market. This presentation will briefly outline the obligations that come with the new California law but then quickly covers broader implications for compensation strategy, talent management, and employee communication.


Our guest speaker will be: 

 Stefan Gaertner PhD - Head, Global People Analytics at Aon, Human Capital Solutions 

Responsibilities

As global People Analytics lead, Stefan’s primary responsibility is to leverage the Human Capital data Aon receives from thousands of clients to generate insights that change the way how employees manage their people. He is located in Los Angeles, California.

Experience

Prior to joining Aon, Stefan was U.S. West Coast lead for People Analytics at Mercer. He also built up the People Analytics function and spent 2 years as a business forecasting lead at Amgen Biotech. Prior to relocating to the U.S., Stefan worked for 5 years at a local Bank and served in the German Infantry.

Expertise

Stefan’s professional focus has been the practical application of data and analytics to improve human capital decision making. Having started with this work some 20 years ago, he is a true pioneer in this space. Today he is a world leading expert in Pay Equity and Pay Transparency analytics with numerous publications and hundreds of completed projects that help clients achieve compliance and pay fairness for everyone. He also leads Aon projects related to Strategic Workforce Planning, AI based pay benchmarking, measuring the productivity impact of employee health/wellness, addressing the root causes of employee turnover and building an empirically based human capital index that simultaneously maximizes productivity and minimizes business risk.

Education

Received a PhD in Human Resource Management from Georgia State University (Atlanta, Georgia) and the equivalent of an MBA from University of Paderborn (Germany).

Stefan taught classes in applied statistics and Human Resource Management at Georgia State University and more recently led a workshop on Strategic Workforce Planning at Pepperdine University.

Throughout his career as an academic, practitioner and consultant, he studied the relationship between human capital management and company risk/performance. He shares his insights daily when working with clients and in numerous presentations/ publications ranging from academic journals (e.g., Journal of Management) and practitioner magazines (e.g., Workspan Magazine, Aon’s One Brief) to professional/academic conferences (e.g. SIOP, Academy of Management, HR Tech, World at Work Conference).
